Going Into the Wayback Machine

So a few weeks ago, I was rooting around the Dingus, which is my desktop, and I found a file very simply called “Dimensionsix Dot Net”. Intrigued, I looked at this file, and found that it was a full backup of all my posts from the old D6, back from when I moved from Movable Type to WordPress. I have now loaded all of those posts up into here, so there is a complete record of my boring drivel dating all the way back to my very first post on D6. Some of the formatting is messed up from the move, but you can get the gist.

Setting the Bar Realistically

Happy New Year! I hope that 2011 brings you everything you want in life.

I have one resolution. When I saw U2 at the old Giants Stadium in 2009, I bought a souvenir t-shirt that didn’t really fit right. I’m going to see U2 again this summer. My goal is to lose enough weight so that shirt is comfortable. It’s all about setting goals that are reachable. I think this is a better target than just saying “I’m going to lose X pounds this year.”

One note about the blog. I figured out how to do a child theme in WordPress, so my customizations to the blog’s look shouldn’t be destroyed every time I need to update WP in the background. Progress, one bit at a time.

Prettying Up the Place

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve done some more redecorating to the blog. Much of this was made extremely simple by the use of the Google Fonts API, which makes putting fancier fonts on the web a whole lot simpler (and wonderfully legally free!).

I’ve been dabbling in website design and HTML since 1995 or so and it’s amazing to see how far we’ve come, and how we can use things like CSS, HTML5, and now this Fonts thing to make webpages look awesome.

Small Changes

I know I’ve been super lax about writing in here lately, but if you notice, there is a small change to the blog that I love. You will see that the D6 header image is now randomized and will change when you refresh the page or click on a link to a post or page. I took the pictures from my Flickr account. Honestly, this is one of my more favorite things that I’ve gotten to do with this blog in its lifetime.

Behind the Eight Ball

Oy, I admit that I’ve been really behind the eight ball with writing in here. It’s been almost two months? Bad blogger! I feel the need to get back on the horse here as now both my girlfriend and her best friend have entered the blogging world.

There certainly is a lot to talk about and I should get to tackling all of it, but let’s start where it needs to start. What the fuck is up with this jeggings fad? Skinny jeans not skinny enough? It looks silly people, downright silly.

A (Somewhat) Fresh Start

So, it turns out fixing up this 2010 theme from WordPress wasn’t all that bad. I managed to get the “official” D6 color in there, get my titles up in my font, and even a nifty picture where the header picture goes (and yes, it’s appropriately licensed to match the rest of the site. I took it after all). I’m pleased. The blog looks refreshed and more up to date with the more modern look and feel of the internet and blogs.

The next trick will be to have some rotating header images to be different every time you visit. I’ve already combed my flickr page for some images to use. Just have to figure out how to do it. I’m sure there’s a plugin for that.

Accidental Catharsis

In the process of upgrading all things blog, I had upgraded the version of K2, which is the theme I’ve been using pretty much since I moved this blog to WordPress some four or five years ago. Well, one thing that happened is that K2 changed the way that it handles customizing the theme to your liking (the colors, my header image, etc). In the process of trying to get everything to work, I accidentally deleted the files I used to make my customizations. Eeep!

Now I’m at a crossroads. I’ve wanted to do something to touch up the look and feel of this thing for a long time now. This sort of leaves me the chance. I’ve temporarily switched the blog over to the default 2010 theme that comes with WordPress 3.0. I rather like it, but I lost my header image, and the theme puts the name of the blog in its own font above by default. That’s easy enough for me to turn off, I suppose, but I’m not sure where to proceed. Therefore, the look and feel of the blog will be off for a bit while I decide what to do.
