So let’s be honest about something here. The Bush veto of the SCHIP bill is not that hard to figure out at all. It doesn’t really matter that a bulk of Congress supports it, or that 45 of 50 state governors support it. It doesn’t even matter that giving kids health care might be a huge moral issue. When it comes to understanding why Bush torpedoed SCHIP, only one thing matters. The people who would be hurt most by the SCHIP decision are the insurance companies. It’s that plain and simple. The main thing to remember about this administration is that nothing happens unless a few palms can be greased. Not only that, but Bush knows that he can count on enough Republicans in Congress will stand behind him and vote his way on these issues that any sort of protest is completely moot (on a side note, you seriously wonder, does Karl Rove have like files on each and every Republican in government, like J. Edgar Hoover had back in the day to keep them all in line?). This is why our energy policy was written by the energy companies, logging companies write our environmental policy, and our vital military logistics operations are being run by KBR, Halliburton, and Blackwater.
Welcome to the new American reality, folks, where everything is bought. The sooner we realize this, the sooner we fix it.
